The chapter begins with a brief overview of research on medication non-adherence in bipolar disorders and then focuses on findings regarding individuals at risk of non-adherence that may be more informative when trying to address the problem in clinical settings. It then briefly highlights the general principles of engagement, as strategies that enhance adherence are unlikely to be effective unless practised within the context of an appropriate therapeutic relationship. This is followed by an overview of a health beliefs model that may help clinicians in their attempts to enhance treatment adherence and some simple strategies that can be employed in day-to-day clinical practice to reduce the risk of non-adherence.
